Several research projects have recently been or are currently developed at the DCS.

In the area of operations research, the DCS has contributed to the development of UMTS protocols introducing techniques to optimize channel usage (EU Projects FUTURE, SAILOR) studied methods for the solution of difficult cutting and packing problems with applications in industrial settings (EU Project SCOOP), and, funded by the European Space Agency and with such partners as Telespazio, devised a novel multi-mission automatic scheduler for satellite constellations. Other relevant studies have regarded the optimal assignment of transmission frequencies in TV broadcasting and, on the methodological side, mathematical techniques (orbital branching) to deal with highly symmetric combinatorial problems, as well as stronger reformulations of the vertex packing problem.

The area of algorithms is mostly interested in the analysis and design of efficient algorithms for distributed systems: the most recent research has been focused on evaluating the combined effect on network performance of shortage of computation time and of users cooperation/ collaboration. Besides the classical complexity vs. accuracy analysis, the investigation (also carried out under the recently approved National Project COGENT) mainly aims at modelling the behaviour of autonomous users on network performance by resorting to notions of equilibrium in order to characterize solutions consistent with rational and selfish users having a limited capability of cooperation.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of L'Aquila has an extensive portfolio of research projects, including collaborations with industries, government organisations and other high-ranking Universities in Italy and overseas.
